Ok…so it’s fair to say that all things are subjective. A question like “what make a great touring motorcycle?” largely depends on the rider and the tour, not just the bike. For instance a good friend of mine is quite often to be found mixing it up with the fast lads on track days…on his BMW R1200GS, where as another friend of mine has recently returned from a European tour on his GSXR600. So whilst it is probably fair to say that horses are normally best at their chosen courses…it’s all subjective. So with that in mind…here’s our top 15 choices of used bikes to go touring on.
No.15 triumph Sprint ST 1050
The Triumph Sprint ST 1050 has been around for a dogs age and has been through a few incarnations, but in general it is on the sportier riding side of the touring market with a medium seat height of 815mm, a healthy 128bhp and well as a consumption of 48mpg and a decent tank range of 213 miles. Equipment is good and there is a reasonable amount of comfort for both rider and pillion so traveling between fuel stops is a pleasure rather than a chore. It handles well, if a little spongy under high speed cornering and the bike is more than capable of munching up motorway miles as well as enjoying twisty back roads. There are some fantastic used bargains to be had on the market too!
