It’s fair to say that in the mid 70’s, with the release of the Mk1 Golf GTi, VW not only dominated, but essentially invented the hot hatch market. the Mk2 took the formula a step further with a 16v option and even a G60 supercharged model with 139bhp and 158bhp respectively! Then, unfortunately, it all kind of went wrong for the GTi with the mk3 and mk4 out shined by the other models in the range, particularly the GT TDi and VR6. Essentially, this was a result of VW condemning the GTi to the fate of a trim level, rather than a model in itself…that is, until the MK5 GTi FSI Turbo was released in 2004/5.
